DAP Health and Jewish Family Service Partner to Vaccinate Holocaust Survivors

DAP Health’s vaccine framework is rooted in health equity, ensuring communities and populations disproportionately affected by COVID-19 have priority access to the vaccine. Outreach to our patients age 65 and over has already begun.

Welcoming local survivors of the Holocaust to DAP Health for COVID vaccinations, we met Jerry Moses, who says he is convinced receiving the vaccine is saving his life. In recounting his experience as a survivor, he told us about saying no to vengeance, and how things can change for the better if we have patience.

Last week as we observed International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2021, DAP Health started working with our lifelong friends Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS) to begin scheduling COVID-19 vaccinations at DAP Health for local survivors of the Holocaust.

During routine calls to their membership, JFS discovered that there were elderly Holocaust survivors in their Café Europa program (funded by a grant from Jewish Federation of the Desert) who needed assistance getting both their first and second vaccine appointments. JFS Director of Community Outreach, Julie Hirsh, sprang into action. She reached out to DAP Health about a partnership with JFS to help facilitate their Holocaust survivors in receiving the sought after rounds of shots.

DAP answered the call and quickly worked with Julie to make the first set of twelve appointments, and is continuing to schedule more, for some of JFS’s most vulnerable community members, those over 65 who may have underlying health concerns.

"We are so appreciative that DAP Health was willing to assist and quick to respond,” said Julie Hirsh It is such a wonderful feeling to be able to collaborate with community partners who share the common interest of our Coachella Valley residents.”

About Jewish Family Service of the Desert

JFS is a non-sectarian agency founded on the Jewish principle of “Healing the World” (Tikkun Olam), and we currently offer that support through telecare mental health counseling, augmented case management that includes one of the only sources of emergency financial assistance in the Valley, well-check phone calls to isolated clients, and special programming for our local Holocaust survivors. For nearly 40 years, JFS has offered life-sustaining support. We are passionate about our Coachella Valley, and we now offer nearly 16,000 annual services to over 3200 clients. If it touches the heart of the Valley, it touches the heart of JFS! Become a member of the JFS family by volunteering or donating.

About DAP Health

DAP Health (DAP) is an advocacy-based health center in Palm Springs, CA serving over 8,000 patients, offering medical and mental healthcare, STI testing and treatment, dentistry, pharmacy, and lab. A variety of wraparound services enable patients to experience optimal health, including social services, support groups, alternative therapies, and other wellness services. Excellent HIV care is provided by the largest team of specialized clinicians in the area.

DAP opened one of California’s first COVID clinic and hotlines to offer screening, testing, and treatment. DAP is also working to address social determinants of health that are causing negative health outcomes during this pandemic, like food and housing insecurity, joblessness, isolation, and access to ongoing healthcare.

DAP’s sexual health clinic offers STI testing and treatment, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), and HIV and HCV testing. DAP has earned Charity Navigator’s highest rating for the twelfth consecutive year – landing DAP in the top 6% of nonprofits rated. The distinction recognizes that DAP exceeds industry standards in terms of financial health, accountability, and transparency.

Messages of Kindness Are Meant to Be Shared

DAP Health Insights – Monday February 1, 2021, from David Brinkman, CEO

If you are one of the 270,000 drivers who pass our campus at the corner of Vista Chino and Sunrise Way each month, you may have seen these messages on our marquee. We love the positive response we have received from community members moved by each statement’s importance. And we wanted to share them with you here if you are one of the many people leaving their home less often.

Looking Ahead After FDA Cabenuva Approval

The COVID pandemic has interrupted HIV testing and treatment for millions, including access to antiretroviral medications necessary to live. We cheered when the FDA approved once-monthly Cabenuva injections to treat HIV last month, because taking medication in pill form every day is challenging for some patients.

DAP Health is one of the few health centers in the U.S. working on a study intended to make life even easier for people with HIV by showing the effectiveness of using ART injections even less often—just once every two months.

This regimen is not publicly available, but it holds a lot of promise for DAP patients, according to Dr. Tulika Singh, DAP director of research. You can read more here

Vaccinating Holocaust Survivors in our Community

DAP Health’s vaccine framework is rooted in health equity, ensuring communities and populations disproportionately affected by COVID have priority access to the vaccine. Outreach to our patients age 65 and over has already begun.

Last week as we observed International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2021, DAP Health humbly worked with our lifelong friends Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS) to begin scheduling COVID vaccinations at DAP Health for local survivors of the Holocaust.

Avoid Vaccination Scams

Waiting for the COVID vaccine is difficult, and it is causing some to fall prey to fraudulent offers they receive via e-mail, telephone or text.  The Riverside County District Attorney's Office has set up a hotline for anyone who believes they may be the victim of any vaccination scam.

Please, report COVID vaccine scams in Riverside County by calling (951) 955-0764.

The State is prioritizing vaccines for equitable distribution to everyone in California who wants it at no cost and regardless of immigration status. If someone tries to sell it to you or move you up the list, it is a scam.

Collaborating for Public Health Takes Friends

DAP Health Insights -- Saturday January 9, 2021, from David Brinkman, CEO

Inspiration for the New Year

The challenge to community health centers is growing as funding continues to be redirected towards COVID relief, threatening care for about 28 million patients they served across the U.S. in 2018. We are collaborating more than ever with other non-profits working for health equity in our Valley for a united approach to public health.

Turning of the New Year—A Show of Hope hosted online by United Methodist Church of Palm Springs, gave everyone a chance to recalibrate and readjust as the New Year begins. It also raised funds for DAP and other non-profits.

Thanks to what Pastor Jane Voigts calls the “magic of saying ‘yes, and,’ Valley entertainers and non-profits convened and collaborated to create a celebration that no one will forget. You can hear more about how together we are finding hope, even in the darkest places in my video message below.

DAP Health Center Will Grow in 2021

Services at DAP are expanding in 2021, but our patients won’t necessarily have to leave home in order to receive them. More mobile van services, help getting Internet access, and telehealth will make health easier this year for many.

COVID’s effect on healthcare and our community continues to develop, but we are acting now to address these challenges. You can read more in our cover story in The Standard Magazine here.

Gratitude for Food Assistance

Food insecurity in this Valley has worsened because of COVID, and the challenges are not ending soon. Thanks to The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and the Pendleton Foundation, our partners at Find Food Bank distributed over 66,000 pounds of food in just two days at the end of last month. This food will provide sustenance for clients of DAP, plus at nonprofits across the Valley, like AAP – Food Samaritans, The Narrow Door, and The Salvation Army USA.

Freedom from Smoking Clinic Resumes

Smoking cigarettes can cut anyone’s life short, and the threat drastically increases for people with HIV (PWH). We are encouraging everyone to stop smoking during this pandemic, although stress and isolation can increase the urge.

We are excited to launch our no-charge Freedom from Smoking clinic, started this week to provide the support smokers need. This 7-week program is open to the public and will take place each week via Zoom. Anyone interested should e-mail Cory Pulver at [email protected] or call 760-992-0469.
