Felipe Saavedra, MD

Primary Care Physician

Dr. Felipe Saavedra (he/him/his) is an HIV Specialist and Family Medicine physician who has been working with the LGBTQ+ community since 2009. He completed a fellowship in LGBTQ Healthcare at UCLA in 2021, becoming the first Latinx physician specifically trained to care for the diverse population of the LGBTQ+ community.

In 2021, Dr. Saavedra joined DAP Health as a primary care physician and HIV Specialist (AAHIVS). He takes great pride in providing excellent and thorough care to patients of all backgrounds and has extensive experience caring for queer and gender-diverse individuals and their families.

Dr. Saavedra is passionate about connecting with patients to address acute, ongoing, and routine medical issues and achieving better health outcomes. He provides care for HIV/AIDS, PrEP/PEP, STI screening, and other specialized services like High-Resolution Anoscopy (HRA), Suboxone treatment, and gender-affirming care.

Felipe was born and raised in Chile, where he graduated from the University of Chile. During this time, he developed a passion for caring for the LGBTQ+ community as a researcher at an HIV/AIDS specialty clinic in Santiago and later as a primary care physician.

In 2015, Felipe joined a pre-residency program at UCLA, where he also completed his Family Medicine residency in 2020. During his training, he educated himself and colleagues on critical healthcare issues impacting LGBTQ+ individuals and improved the lives of underserved patients throughout LA County, many of whom were Spanish-speaking. He cared for trans and gender non-binary adults and kids as part of the groundbreaking UCLA Gender Health Program and co-created the UCLA Gender Health Resiliency Group. As a Clinical Instructor at UCLA, Felipe created a curriculum for first-year medical students exposing them to various LGBTQ+ topics, and continues to mentor clinicians and trainees today.

“I want to put my knowledge, experiences, and bilingual and bicultural skills to work for the diverse LGBTQ+ community in the Coachella Valley. My goal is to create a judgment-free space for my patients to ask questions and feel heard. I believe in using the latest research to inform the most effective treatments for my patients.”

Outside of work, Felipe enjoys spending time with his husband and corgi and exploring Southern California. He also enjoys traveling, volunteering, practicing yoga, and cooking traditional Chilean food for friends and family.

DAP Health clinicians, including Dr. Saavedra, provide the latest HIV/AIDS treatments in a safe, judgment-free environment. They are skilled in working with LGBTQ+ individuals to craft treatments that work and enhance their patients’ quality of life. Services include HIV testing; STI screening; linkage to care; HIV medications, including antiretrovirals, PEP and PrEP; patient education; mental health services; dental services; and more.
